Seafolk

The seafolk are comfortable in and out of water. They breathe air like most humanoids, but they also have gills that allow them to swim underwater. However, they cannot last for extended periods away from water. They are native to the salt water of the Great Ocean, but they have been able to function well in rivers and lakes by ingesting heavy salts on a regular basis. Seafolk adventurers have been known to survive by eating their regular meals salted almost to the point of spoiling it for any other humanoid, then taking a weekly swim in a river or lake for a period of hours equal to another humanoid’s rest period. Bathtubs and cisterns will not work for a seafolk person though, it must be free flowing water. If they go for more than a week without swimming, they begin to suffer from dehydration. After two weeks, they must return to the ocean, a freshwater body won’t work anymore, though it may postpone death. No seafolk person has survived for three weeks without swimming. Similarly, salt deprivation will also kill them. If they go for more than three days without salt, they will begin to suffer symptoms similar to the water deprivation. Five days without salt will require returning to the ocean immediately. Ten days without salt is fatal.

Seafolk average just a little smaller than humans, ranging from 5’ to 6’. Their body shape is humanoid, though their coloring tends towards blues and greens. Their hands and feet are webbed for swimming and are generally wider than other humanoids. Their skin is thicker than most other humanoids precluding the need for protection from shoes, boots, and gloves. Very rarely are such made for seafolk.

Seafolk characters get a +2 to constitution and charisma.
